Breitling has grown to be the world's leading manufacturer of precision timepieces for the aviation industry. The company's beginnings go back to La Chaux-de-Fonds, where Léon Breitling first opened a workshop in 1884. He started the company making pocket watches and chronographs.
The company got its famous military background when Léon's son, Gaston, initiated the production of wrist watches in 1914 for the military. They are now proud to have supplied the U.S. Government with timepieces, and today, most of the world's major aircraft manufacturers use Breitling precision timing devices and instruments as standard equipment.
They have been associated with flying since 1936, when Willy Breitling (Leon's grandson) released a chronometer for instrument panels in aircraft cockpits. The Navimeter, a super chronograph designed especially for pilots, was launched in 1952.
The company continued to cater to the airline industry, in 1970, they introduced the Breitling GMT, a chronograph with two hour hands (one for the 12 hour system, and one for the 24 hours system).
A year later the Breitling Unitime was released, a timepiece that simultaneously shows time in all countries of the World. The pilot Ernest Schneider acquired the company in 1979 and has been careful to preserve its tradition. Today collectors, citizens, and pilots alike appreciate them.
