New “Frogman” watches from Hamilton immerse themselves in spectacular maritime memories

February 2005 – The new “Frogman” watches in the Hamilton Khaki collection make reference to an exciting diving history that took place both in reality and on screen. One of the best kept secrets of World War II were the activities of the teams of US naval “frogmen” who prepared safe landings for supplies and troops on hostile shores. Almost as confidential as these missions was the use of special Hamilton diving watches and the contribution made by their water resistance and accuracy. By 1951 the secret was out and stars of the Oscar-nominated movie “The Frogmen” openly wore these proven timepieces. Now Hamilton is bringing out a new “Frogman” to keep alive this tradition of diving heroes that already stretches from Sicily to Hollywood.

The 21st century “Frogman” by Hamilton is made of titanium and is water resistant to a depth of 200 meters, 150 meters deeper than its 1940s predecessors. Thanks to a special coating, the titanium achieves a resistance equal to that of steel (600 Vickers). The coating also deters scratching and fingerprints. A screw-down crown protector on the 40 mm case confirms its determination to keep out the enemy – water. “Frogman” has a sapphire glass and a Swiss ETA 2895.2 automatic movement, which is partially visible through a window at the rear of the case.

There are two variations on the “Frogman” theme. A model with a sandblasted case is extremely true to its military roots. The authenticity statement is emphasized by a dark green, water resistant canvas strap. This strap has an extra “loop” of material to put the hand through so that if the watch is unfastened, it is not lost. The canvas strap also has a hypoallergenic lining. For those who wish to tone down the ruggedness, there is a choice of a sandblasted metal bracelet or sporty black rubber strap. The second “Frogman” has a confident contemporary look with its brushed titanium case. Also to cater for the full spectrum of today’s tastes, the wearer of this model can choose between a metal bracelet, a black, water resistant leather strap or a black rubber one. On this version, the small second- counter at six o’clock resembles a target with its red hand, a subtle reminder of the original timepieces’ wartime purpose. Both “Frogman “ watches have a black face with a date display and easy-to-read luminous digits – yellow on the sandblasted model and white on its polished partner.

Hamilton was founded in 1892 in Lancaster, PA, USA.
