They've been around for quite some time, in fact, the first portable watches came about around the year 1500 when the use of the mainspring was developed and replaced a weight in timepieces. These first portable watches were worn on chains around the neck.

These early timekeepers were very decorative, but were not very accurate. In the early 1600's, people started engraving silver and gold watches. But these were still inaccurate, it wasn't until around 1670 that they improved in this area.

They became more accurate around 1670, a year which saw the development of the balance wheel, and soon after, minute and hour hands became more prominent. In 1720 the French added enameled dials, and all of Europe followed. The anchor escapement, developed in 1755, dramatically increased the accuracy of the pocket watch, though it wasn't utilized until 80 years after its development.
