Watch Winders Take Care of Your Automatic Watches
All automatic watches work on the principle of automatic winding with the help of a moving weight inside the watch. The weight rotates and keeps the winding mechanism on inside the watch. When the watch is not worn, this mechanism does not work. Here comes the relevance of a watch winder. It is a device that helps the automatic watches run when they are not worn. By emulating the style of human movements, it moves the watch in a circular pattern to stimulate the self-winding mechanism.
The automatic watches are designed in a way that they are protected from getting over wound. Still it is important to use a timer-based winder because it prevents the extra pressure on the winding mechanism. With the winder you do not have to keep your watch set in motion for twenty-four hours, thirty minutes of motion is sufficient to keep it wound.
Although winders are useful for special 'battery-less' quartz watches such as Seiko Kinetic or Omega-Matic they do not function on battery-operated quartz watches.
The types of winders:
There are mainly three kinds of winders available in the market:
Functional: They are capable of handling the responsibility of winding more than one watch simultaneously. Usually they connect the watches from the outside. They work more efficiently if placed on something with a good height. When in full form they oscillate very fast.
Elegant: They are an improvement over the functional winders from a point of view of appearance. They look like an enclosed box, usually made up of high quality wood or leather. They are attractive enough to be displayed on you desk, at the same time they are small enough to slip into the safety of a drawer or vault.
Extravagant: As the name suggests, you get from them a wide range of facilities beyond imagination. They are provided with a heater that keeps the temperature of your watch near your body temperature. Some of these winders are provided with such amazing features as built-in storage drawers or atomic-clock-synchronized time displays.
Some winders come complete with an a/c and battery powered units.
Human movements vary in manner and speed. But the watch winder’s working is restricted to a limited directions and types of movement. So an inadequately designed winder may affect the watch’s mechanisms from excessive movement. So it is generally advised to avoid the use of a bad winder if you cannot afford to buy a good quality winder.
